Lake Effect Snow

December 7-8, 2006

FIG 1
A surge of cold air following an Alberta Clipper created an environment favorable for Lake Effect Snow. The snow began during the early morning of December 7th, and continued off-and-on through the morning of December 8th. By the time the snow ended, several inches had accumulated across Northeastern Ohio and Northwestern Pennsylvania. Here in Newton Falls, 5.5 inches fell. FIG 1 is a visible satellite picture taken on December 9th. It clearly shows the snow cover over NE Ohio and NW Pennsylvania, as well as Michigan, Ontario and New York State.

FIG 2
FIG 2 shows the snowfall totals for the area. The heaviest snow fell where the most intense bands set up, mostly in NW PA where a Lake Huron Fetch was able to become established. But a few areas in NE Ohio saw over a foot as well.

FIG 3
FIG 3 was taken in Newton Falls on the afternoon of December 7th. I shows the heavy snow in progress.
